ZenBusiness Renews at $199. West Virginia Never Ordered the Service.

Ground rules before anything else. WV Registered Agent.org publishes this page, sells West Virginia agent service for $99 a year, and profits if you switch to us. The ZenBusiness figures are a different kind of claim. Every one was transcribed off that company's price pages in a July 2026 check, and none of them has been shaded.

What ZenBusiness Is Genuinely Good At

The interface. Nobody in this category has built a cleaner one. Formation paperwork, deadline tracking, and served documents all sit behind one login, arranged well enough that a first-time owner can work it without calling anybody, and the signup flow has clearly been tested on real humans rather than shipped on a guess. Anyone who wants one control panel running the entire business has a real reason to prefer them, and a page that denied it would deserve to lose you by the second heading.

We sell something much narrower. One agent seat in West Virginia, one price, nothing else on the invoice.

The Opening Rate Is Not the Standing Rate

Bought by itself, outside any formation order, ZenBusiness asks $99 plus state fees for the first term. Renewals run $199. Nothing about either figure is concealed and neither is bait. The comparison is where it goes sideways, because a shopper lines an introductory rate up against somebody else's permanent one and the two are not measuring the same thing. Year seven with ZenBusiness reads $199. Year seven with us reads $99.

The Verb West Virginia Chose

Here is a fact that costs us money to print. West Virginia's code does not order anybody to hire an agent, and it does not order anybody to name one either. The provision at § 31B-1-108 says an LLC "may continuously maintain" an office in the state along with an agent to take service of process. May. Keep nobody in that role and the Secretary of State stands in as your company's statutory attorney-in-fact, receiving service on its behalf by operation of law.

So the $199, and our $99 too, buys a service rather than settling an obligation. What the money actually gets you is worth saying plainly, because the alternative is not weightlessness. Service routed through the Secretary of State still has to reach a human being, which means whatever mailing address the state holds for your company becomes the place a lawsuit travels toward, at government pace and in plain view of anyone reading the public record. Appointing your own agent swaps that for a staffed West Virginia office that opens the envelope the day it lands, and puts our street address on the filing instead of the room you sleep in.

That is a six-hundred-dollar spread over seven years, attached to a duty this state defines identically no matter whose name ends up on the line.

What Ninety-Nine Dollars Covers

One number, printed once, and it does not step up when the renewal notice arrives. Anything served at our West Virginia office gets imaged and filed to your portal before the business day closes, with an email right behind it. The public record shows our address where yours would otherwise sit. Alerts go out ahead of the annual report window so the July 1 due date never turns up as a surprise. West Virginia handles this on a single application, Form AAO, which the Secretary of State uses for appointments and changes covering process agents, officers, and addresses across every entity type on its books. Item 1 is where you mark what kind of company is filing. Item 4 is the agent section, and it carries a signature line for the person or company coming in, who consents to the appointment on the face of the document rather than through a separate letter you have to chase.

The Business & Licensing Division takes the completed application with a $15 fee. Paper works. So does the One Stop Business Portal at onestop.wv.gov, where the state adds a $1.00 processing charge to online filings, itemized down to the single dollar in a way most states never bother with.

Sequence runs one direction. Your successor has to be engaged before the form can be finished at all, since item 4 needs their name and their signature on it, so hire first, file second, check the record third, and cancel ZenBusiness fourth. West Virginia will not leave your company unreachable while that plays out, because the Secretary of State backstops service by statute. What a stale record actually costs you is the channel you picked: for as long as the state file names somebody else, a summons heads toward whoever is still listed rather than to the inbox you are watching.
