Read this knowing the source. WV Registered Agent.org sells the $99 service being recommended at the bottom, so treat our enthusiasm as interested. The LegalZoom numbers are not ours to spin. They are what that company had posted when we looked in July 2026.

The Case for Paying LegalZoom

Recognition. LegalZoom is the one name in consumer legal services that a banker, a landlord, or a nervous business partner will have heard of, and there is a version of the calculation where that is worth money. Nobody asks a follow-up question when you say who your agent is. For an owner who values the absence of that conversation, the premium is not irrational, and this page is not going to argue that the brand is worthless.

$249, Flat, Renewing on Its Own

That is the rate, it auto-renews, and our July 2026 pass found no opening discount anywhere on their pricing pages. Give them one point for it: the figure in year one is the figure in year six, which is more than several cheaper-looking competitors can say. The objection is the size of it, and the fact that the renewal happens whether or not you thought about it.

Set It Beside What West Virginia Itself Charges

The recurring bill the state sends a West Virginia LLC is $25. That is the annual report, flat, filed in the window that opens January 1 and shuts June 30. LegalZoom's yearly agent fee is a dollar short of ten of those.

Two more state figures for scale. Bringing the company into existence costs $100 on the Articles of Organization. And West Virginia waives both of those for veteran-owned entities: no formation fee, and no annual report fee for the first four years. A veteran-owned LLC can be four years into business having paid the Secretary of State nothing at all, while the same four years of LegalZoom agent service would have collected $996.

There is also the question of what the fee is for. West Virginia frames the agent role in permissive language, and a company that names nobody has service delivered to the Secretary of State instead, who is authorized to receive it. That does not make the role pointless, since papers sitting in a state office still have to find you, and a private agent is how you decide where they land. It does mean the $249 is buying a choice rather than closing out a demand.

What Ninety-Nine Buys Here

A West Virginia street address that takes over the public record from yours. Whatever a process server delivers to it is scanned the day it lands, filed to your portal, and announced by email. A reminder before the report deadline, since a $50 late fee attaches to anything filed after July 1 and takes the bill to $75. Renewal at the identical $99, every time.

Fifteen dollars appears twice on this site and the two have nothing to do with each other: the state charges $15 to record an agent change, and we charge $15 an item to scan ordinary business mail that is not service of process. That second one is our entire add-on list, printed here rather than discovered on a statement in month nine.

One correction to any reading of the table above as a cheapest-anywhere claim. BetterLegal's posted rate is $90, below ours by nine dollars. What $99 actually is: near the floor of published flat pricing in this state, with nothing tiered on top of it.

What It Takes to Replace LegalZoom on the West Virginia Record

One document does it. Form AAO is the state's all-purpose change instrument, covering the agent line, the officer list, and the addresses on file, and the Business & Licensing Division processes it for $15 by mail or online. The only unusual requirement is that the incoming agent signs it too, consenting in writing right where the change is made, which also means the provider you are leaving never gets a vote and never gets a signature to sit on.

Order matters more than speed. Get your replacement engaged, then file, then watch the record update, then cancel the LegalZoom subscription so a $249 charge does not run one more time. West Virginia guarantees a legal landing place for process throughout, because the Secretary of State fills the gap by statute. It does not guarantee that the papers land somewhere you will see them the same afternoon, and that is the whole reason to keep the record current.
